The Contractors Breaking Down Barriers In Orange County

We here at CannGrow are absolutely, 100% sick to death of contractors. We watch HGTV with a sort of embittered mirth as the smiling families laugh together with their responsible and competent contractor who managed to get the remodeling done on time and under budget. This, friends, we consider to be the greatest sort of fiction imaginable – every contractor we’ve ever dealt with has been late on deadlines, over budget, been totally incompetent, and every combination of those three factors imaginable.

So, it goes without saying that when we are recommended a contractor, we treat it with some pretty healthy levels of suspicion. Whether we needed a contractor for our bathroom remodeling or just a quick countertop replacement, we’ve been burned so many times before! What makes these guys so different from the rest?

Well, readers, this time, it IS different. The company recommended to us – Inspired Remodels, Inc. – have truly proven themselves to be the exception to the rule. Not only are they incredible at what they do (seriously, take a look at those pictures!), they manage to be fairly priced and get the job done in a reasonable time frame!

We know it’s hard to believe, but you can take a quick look at their 5-star(!!) Yelp page and take a quick gander at what their customers and the people they work with are saying:

Johnny B., a sub contractor for the company, has this to say about them:

You want to know how to pick a great General Contractor / Designer?  Ask the sub contractors who work for them!  Marinate on that….
I own an electrical contracting company and we do remodeling projects for many quality GC’s in Orange County.  So, we have a unique and deep perspective on the quality, character, beauty, and fairness of them all.  Inspired Remodels is as good as it gets.  Joe, Jason, Colin and the team are simply a cut above with their process and attention to detail.  They push us and I love it because we want to be the best.  Additionally, I’m a veteran and appreciate process, detail, and high expectations – and a commitment to the mission.  These guys are tops.  You will be impressed and proud to share your experience with your friends.  Don’t do a remodel without getting them on your wish list.

Lisa G., a customer, gave this glowing praise:

After spending time looking for a contractor to renovate our master bathroom, laundry and power bath, we settled on Inspired Remodels and I’m so glad we did! From start to finish every single person that worked in our home was professional, considerate and communicated with us throughout the process. I am rather “particular” about things being just right and they went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. Joe and Collin were very patient with me during the selection process and Jason was responsive and made me feel at ease with any questions I had along the way. The tradesmen were all outstanding but I need to give a special shoutout to Haime and Rudy, Mark and Ulysses, for their attention to detail and the long hours they put into making our home beautiful.  Thank you, thank you! I highly recommend using IR if you have high expectations – they will be met!

So, if you’re looking for a contracting crew who WON’T leave you bitter, angry, and muttering dark words of retribution, give Inspired a call. You’ll thank us later!

To Turf Or Not To Turf

Southern California may have some of the best weather on the planet, but it is no stranger to environmental disasters. The record ferocity of wildfires in the preceding years, while primarily affecting northern and central California, have not left our part of the state untouched: the Woolsey fire of 2018 was one of the most destructive fires in the State’s history, dwarfed only by the other massive wildfires concurrently burning through the piled-up undergrowth in the state’s forests.

One of the primary causes for these events is the high incidence of draught in the state – California, while incredibly beautiful, is highly subject to the ever-changing weather patterns in the Pacific ocean and the consistent high pressure systems moving in from the high desert to its east. This relationship between low pressure ocean systems and high pressure desert atmospheric conditions leads to a propensity for random, yet devastating, extended periods of draught, which leaves great swathes of our forests dead and the perfect kindling for massive fires to break out.

As citizens of this great state, we’ve been rather lax in our response to these dangers, choosing to utilize far greater amounts of water than the state can reasonably produce on its own, leading to greater and greater shortages in years of draught. One of the primary culprits of this water usage is the suburban home dwellers’ favorite aspect of home ownership – our lawns!

Lawns in the state can suck up more than 100 gallons of water in a year, and with millions of homes and businesses that are looking to have that luscious green carpet in front of their doors, the compounding effect leads to an ever greater demand for water on our parched state. With many unwilling to give up the aesthetically pleasing and calming effects of their greenery, what can we, as responsible residents in the great state of California, do?

One alternative that is gaining considerable momentum in areas of southern California like Orange County and San Diego is replacing your natural grass with artificial grass. A far cry from the astroturf of football stadiums in the 1970’s, modern turf is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, with plenty of different options for texture, color, and tactile sensation.

The growth in usage is no joke – according to a Guardian article from August 2nd, 2019, “…the market is growing. Dozens of specialist firms now market fake grass as a replacement for garden lawns. UK sales surged during last year’s record summer temperatures, according to the industry journal Hortweek, while a report by Up Market Research valued the global market at $2.5bn (£2bn) in 2016 and forecasts a “staggering” rise to $5.8bn by 2023.”

As temperatures continue to rise due to global climate change and average rain fall begin to decline in parts of the world, those who desire a greener lawn may need to begin looking for alternatives. For those of us in the beautiful southern California region who are looking to take the plunge into the world of artificial turf, we highly recommend the local company NoMow Turf, who have been servicing our communities for 15 years.

A quick perusal through their Yelp and Google Review pages reveals that the company and its owner, Pat Bray, have solid reputation for honest, competent work, and the results of their installations speaks for themselves through the pictures available.

If you’re interested in helping our state conserve water while retaining the gorgeous green of your lawn, please give the spotlighted company a look:

Creating A Conscious Space At Work

The human brain is fascinating. Without one realizing it, the unconscious and subconscious parts of our brains are constantly receiving inputs from external stimuli and processing that into emotions, thoughts, and actions. If you are like most Americans, you spend most of your waking hours working in a professional environment at an office. We dedicate our best hours to being at work, so that we may earn a living and provide for our families. One’s success in life and business is largely a result of one’s productivity, and productivity is a direct reflection of how well our time is spent.

There are many reasons why most employees are not operating at their optimal state: stress, fatigue, distractions, and more. This negatively affects employee and business performance, which directly impacts the company’s bottom line.

In recent years, mindfulness has been discussed more and more in world of business. Harvard Business Review found that implementing mindfulness practices resulted in “a 28% reduction in stress, 20% better sleep, and 19% less pain, as well as an
increase in worker productivity worth an estimated $3,000 per employee per year.”

We wanted to share some tips and ideas for creating a more conscious workspace.

It goes without saying that you should keep your phone notifications and screen turned off, so as to reduce visual and audio distractions. However, you should also minimize the number of tabs on your web browser. Also, try to set your email and internal office chat system to alert you for only the most urgent, relevant, and critical notifications.

Grey Laptop on Black Wooden Desk

We all have busy lives. Our minds are constantly racing, trying to do the task at hand while mentally fighting off distractions. Therefore, you should keep your desk and surroundings as minimalistic as possible. A clutter-less physical environment leads to less mental clutter.

Your office furniture should also be optimized to maximize mindfulness. If you are like most professionals, you work in front of a computer, spending most of your working hours sitting at your own desk or at a meeting table. Though most American office workers spend a lot of time sitting, their chairs and desks are not ergonomic, causing discomfort and pain. It is paramount that your office furniture allows you to sit, work, and focus comfortably.

A redesigned office can elevate worker productivity, as well as leave a strong and lasting impression with your clients. Creative Office Design offers an amazing selection of high quality creative office furniture in Los Angeles. Their catalog includes cubicles, chairs, desks, tables, reception units, dining tables, and more. Their experts can help you design a conscious and ergonomic office. Exterminators You Can Rely On

As with many service industries, a lot of people’s opinions have become jaded with exterminator companies over the years after being put through the ringer by one bad egg after another. Companies that won’t call back, are frequently late, over budget, and most of all DISHONEST are rife in the industry, and just like with contracting work, finding a good exterminator oftentimes feels like finding a diamond in the rough.

For our Grand Oaks friends looking for termite treatment and other types of pest control, however, we have some excellent news: we’ve done the heavy lifting for you and have found the best termite exterminator in all the inland L.A. county area: Grand Oaks Termite Control. These guys have been eradicating termites in Pasadena for years now and have the best Yelp review score for an extermination company that we’ve ever seen.

A quick cursory glance through their Google reviews tells you all you need to know about them:

Extraordinary Customer Service! We have been dealing with flying insects and thought it was termites. This company was recommend and the owner Justin totally amazed us with his genuine service – assessment and recommendation. It turns out that we were dealing with flying ants instead and he recommended a company that services that. However, to rule out any termite issues, we asked him to do an inspection. Joe and I are so grateful for the experience we had with him getting informed about insect issues (Caroline Ruth Fernandez)

All I can say is if you have Termites, call Justin! He is definately the best. Friendly, HONEST, and very knowledgable. Hands down made this stressful, worrysome event for my mom and I into something that we could deal with easily. VERY reasonable prices and awesome work. Gary did an outstanding job. Was very neat and respected our place put everything back where it went. Justin took his time to explain and make sure I understood everything. Give them a shot and you won’t be disappointed. You’ll thank yourself for giving them a call. I did.(Arleene Aguirre)

If you have any type of termites or wood boring insect infestations, GRAND OAKS TERMITE CONTROL is the professional GO-TO exterminator company to resolve your issues. The owner, Justin Mater is a fully state licensed termite control specialist and is very knowledgeable about termite infestation and approaches towards exterminating its colonies. what I especially liked was his work ethics….they came as early as 6am in the morning (ON TIME!) to work on & treat my property….very much a NO BS straight-forward extermination company which does not mess around! If they said they will be there….they will be there to take care of your infestation problems! highly recommended!(Don Tamba)

If you live in the Pasadena/San Dimas/Grand Oaks area and you suspect that you may have an infestation of termites or any other pest, give the guys at Grand Oaks a call. They’ll provide incredible service and even fix up some of the wood damaged by the offending insects within a week of the extermination. Honesty, reliability, and great service – everything the other guys are missing.

Catch Them Before It’s Too Late

Warning! Keep your eyes open and your ears listening. It is time to pay attention to the most terrible pest: termites. These insects cause billions of dollars worth of damage across the country, every year. They eat wood and paper, which means that your home could be next.

Gray Magnifying Glass and Eyeglasses on Top of Open Book

What makes termites so dangerous is that they tend to be undetectable without a professional inspection. Subterranean termites live underground, affecting the structure of your home, and are therefore considered to create the most damage. Dry-wood termites attack above ground, and they have their sneaky ways.

Listen carefully. You might hear the subtle sound of clicking through the walls. Termites communicate to one another by shaking their bodies and banging their heads on the wood. Termites also make noises from their chewing.

Look closely. You may be surprised to know that a certain type of termite can fly. Like other flying insects, they are attracted to light and will swarm around collected water. If you see flying termites, it is likely that they have been looking to mate and establish a new colony in your home. In addition, termites shed their wings shortly after finding a mate.

It is easy to confuse termites for other types of insects. Most people mistake termites for white ants. However, there is no such thing is a white ant, which means that if you see something that looks like one, it is probably a termite. A termite has an even width throughout its body, which tends to look like the shape of rice grains.

“Galleries” are the tunnels that termites make inside of wood, however these tunnels are very difficult to detect without laboratory equipment. You can check for termites by tapping on your wood. If it sounds hollow, it may have been eaten by termites. If you notice that your wood doors and window frames are suddenly stiff and hard to open, it may be due to the moisture produced by termites as they eat. The moisture damages and changes the shape of the wood.

They also build mud-like tubes along surfaces in order to travel discreetly. But by the time you have noticed these signs, severe damage may already have been done. Noticing these clues can prevent further damage, but a professional termite inspector can detect the presence of termites even earlier. Regular inspections are highly recommended at least every year for the most thorough method of prevention. Natural Science Exterminator states on their website that they offer a free inspection and $100 off your treatment if you contact them. You can take a proactive measure against a potential termite infestation and save thousands of dollars on extermination and repair costs in the long run.

If you are looking for a pest control service in Garden Grove, Natural Science Exterminating is a certified and family owned business that offers safe, effective, and environmentally friendly termite extermination. They use tent fumigation as the last resort. All of their work is fully licensed and bonded. You can give them a call.

Pain Relief With Mediation

Divorce is an incredibly messy business that often leaves lives in utter shambles once the process has run its course. Not only has your relationship been destroyed, but oftentimes your family has been splintered with deep seated resentment and hatred, all at the cost of thousands upon thousands of dollars in lawyer retainer fees.

So, what are you to do if you realize that your marriage is just not going to work out, but you also don’t want everything you’ve built together to be torn down by greedy family law lawyers looking to score more hours by seeding the ground for more petty fights? The easier, less costly, and emotionally less taxing course is to go with mediation.

Mediation provides a second path for couples whose lives are moving in different directions a way to save their families and their souls a little bit of hurting by using a third party to negotiate and divvy up the estate in a way that no one feels slighted or cheated. For our readers in Orange County, we specifically recommend the Irvine-based divorce mediation firm, McNamee mediations.

McNamee has made a name for itself providing its clients with separations and divorces in the least painful way possible, making it as easy as it could be for them to pick up what’s left and move on with their lives. Their sterling reviews provide proof of their efficacy, including this one from Janet on Yelp:

“Mediation is the way to go. I can’t stress enough that mediation verses going to court is the way to get through your divorce.

Life changing experiences are hard enough, let alone more trauma and heartache that the process of divorce can cause you.

The other obvious burden is the cost, mediation saved us thousands of dollars.

Why people would want to go to court is beyond me. Time alone is your enemy, to drag out a divorce

With a long process is not healthy for anyone.

About McNamee Mediation-

Thank goodness for Colleen McNamee. She walked me through every step. She was respectful, personable, and patient. She is a real person with real answers. She was never cold or uncaring, (which I think most people would expect of a mediation/divorce attorney professional).

As you can see I’m a fan. No BS, I was married for 30 years and this was a heartbreak for me to go through. I am grateful to Colleen McNamee and would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone who is considering mediation.

Enough said.”

If you are in Orange County and are looking for a way to exit your marriage with as little cost, pain, and time as possible in an amicable way with your spouse, we highly recommend that you give McNamee a call. You can only gain from the interaction, and you’d be surprised how beneficial the process can be to your life moving forward.

Clean Spaces For Work

Once upon a time, there were the good old days. Wouldn’t it be great if we could realize that we were in the good old days before we had already left them?

Do you remember your first day at work? How did you feel when you first opened those doors and stepped into that brand new world? You probably felt nervous, scared, and excited, all at the same time. You were then guided to your desk, where you unpacked your chosen belongings and arranged them as well as you could to make yourself feel at home. That’s because we spend most of our life at work. For many of us, that is eight out of sixteen waking hours. And that doesn’t even include the time it takes to prepare for and commute to and from our place of work.

Grayscale Photo of Person Walking on Corridor

Therefore, the office is much like a second home to every working professional. In that sense, it is important to treat our office with care, so that it is maintained as a space that makes both employees and clients feel warm and welcome. Our inner and emotional well-being is directly impacted by the environment we are in, because we are human. But sometimes we forget that we are real, living, breathing, and conscious beings. We forget that we are not robots or factory machines. Our minds are constantly being influenced by thousands of external stimuli on a daily basis, whether we notice it or not. Therefore, most of what we experience on a daily basis is locked away in our unconscious and subconscious mind. An environment that looks chaotic and messy might evoke chaos and messiness internally, whereas an environment that looks calm and clean can give us a great deal of relief and peace.

Therefore, a clean office environment is vital to the productivity and growth of a business. It keeps employee morale high and mental health in check. Employees are constantly taking subtle cues about expectations and standards of work based on how the company is run, which includes the tidiness of the office. That said, if you are an employer, your main responsibilities and managerial pay-grade typically concern you with high-level matters such as staffing, finances, and operations, rather than day-to-day logistics, such as the office cleaning chores.

Some offices have a cleaning chore schedule amongst employees. This can be a great short-term solution if you cannot outsource this to a cleaning service, but we can’t recommend it long-term. Employees are best suited for their specified function and expertise. It might seem like an extraneous expense to pay for cleaning services, but the benefits usually pay for the costs themselves.

Cleanliness is a necessity to every office environment, therefore your best investment might be to outsource the chore to a professional cleaning expert who can do all of the washing, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping for you. Quality Building Services is a fully bonded and insured commercial cleaning service based in Hesperia, with a 30 year reputation as a premier janitorial service company in Southern California. You can rely on their consistent and high quality standards for all of your office cleaning needs, from window washing to power washing to upholstery cleaning, so that you can focus on managing and running your business.

Let Go and Have Faith

Carrie had been hearing from her military husband less and less over the past two weeks. He’d flown out to training camp while Carrie patiently waited for him. It was near Valentine’s Day, and she was in the middle of putting together a care package when she came across a photo on her Facebook timeline. It was of him having dinner with another couple, but there was another woman sitting beside him, with her arm around it. There were two checks. First of all, why was her husband out for dinner when he said he was in training camp? Second of all, Carrie googled the name of the woman who had her arm around her husband; she was a convicted felon.

Carrie immediately texted her husband and asked him what was going on. He did not reply for two days, until she received a call from her husband informing her that they had no future together and that he had been cheating on her.

Carrie called her best friend Nancy and broke down. “HE SAID THAT HE JUST MET HER TWO WEEKS AGO AND THAT THEY’VE BEEN CHEATING TOGETHER. HE SAID I WAS NOT FOR HIM, THAT I WAS NEVER THE ONE FOR HIM.

How could he do this to her?

Nancy: “Carrie, listen, I’m here for you. We’re going to get through this.”
Carrie: “I have been the perfect military wife for the past five years and he decided to throw it all away for a hardcore druggie he just met?! He knew this was going to happen! Why was I so stupid?! How could I have not seen this coming? Why?!”
Nancy: “We are going to get through this. Don’t blame yourself. This isn’t your fault. He is a terrible human being and that has nothing to do with you.”

Unfortunately, every year in the U.S., thousands of people find themselves blindsided, lied to, and cheated on in broken marriages that result in divorces. Carrie, like any devoted spouse, had built her life around her husband and their young daughter. She was a wife who was committed in every sense of the word and did everything she could to support her husband’s career while raising their child, as if she were a single mother for 200 days out of the year. But now, it looked like Carrie was going to become a single mother for real. There was no way she would let her husband have sole custody of her daughter. How could he? His schedule would never allow him to be around and she feared that he would leave them in the care of the law-breaking home-wrecker.

Carrie looked at a photo of her daughter when she was a toddler and wept even harder.

Photo of Woman and Her Daughter Laughing

Luckily, her friend Nancy remained calm and stayed on the phone with her for the rest of the night while researching the best options for Carrie to legally separate from her soon-to-be ex-husband while gaining custody of her daughter.

It turns out that there are four main types of custody: sole custody, joint custody, shared custody, and split custody. In that case, she needed to find Carrie a custody attorney who would be able to fight for sole custody. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a custody attorney acts as an advocate by presenting evidence to convince the court to grant their client child custody. She came across Shuff Law Firm, family attorney based in Santa Ana. She was delighted to read their reviews from couples who had found the right legal representation through marital separation, making the process smooth and amicable rather than drawn out and tortuous. She assured Carrie that everything was going to be okay.

An Innovative Breakthrough in Beauty

The world of semi-permanent makeup is taking off. Microblading is the hottest new cosmetic procedure making women feel more beautiful and confident while saving them time when getting ready in the morning. It is a type of semi-permanent tattoo, meaning that it does not last as long as traditional tattoo makeup. Rather, it lasts one to three years, depending on your skin type. The pigment itself gets metabolized by your body over time, and tends to fade quicker for those with oilier skin types.

Microblading completely transforms the appearance of your brows, thereby transforming the look of your whole face. Permanent makeup is a technological innovation that can be a real timesaver. Most women enhance their brows by applying makeup, which can be a time-consuming daily task for busy individuals. Microblading might cost more than the eyebrow powder or eyebrow liner products typically used, but the results and the effects are completely different than what one can achieve by using makeup alone. This is due to how realistic the the tattoo strokes appear to be like real brow hair, rather than makeup that was applied on top. Moreover, it can be difficult to achieve the perfect shape on a daily basis using makeup alone.

Lift Permanent Makeup is a microblading studio based in California. Microblading brow artists are highly trained at creating the perfect shape so that you can wakeup every morning not worrying about your brows. The outcome is a natural and highly aesthetically pleasing look. Lift Permanent Makeup owner Katrina is a former interior designer, whose love for symmetry and clean lines inspired her to becoming a brow artist.

As you can see above, microblading can give sparse brows a whole new look. For those who have uneven brows, scarred brows, or brow hair loss, microblading can restore the look of a fuller shape.

The procedure itself is relatively non-invasive. Before the tattooing begins, your face is carefully measured using a signature technique based on artistic symmetry, as the shape of your eyebrows can completely change the structural appearance of your features. A technician uses a tool with a very thin needle to etch the appearance of highly realistic hair strokes onto the skin. The pigment is matched to your natural brow color and made to complement your hair color and skin tone.

For most people, the procedure itself does not feel painful, but it does feel slightly uncomfortable. During your appointment, you will be lying down while the technician creates micro cuts and deposits pigments into them. Appointments are between one to two hours long, and a touchup is required four weeks after the initial application. Aftercare is important, as the skin under the brow hairs must properly heal in order for the pigment to stay.

If you are tired of applying brow makeup every day or are struggling to get the perfect shape, you may be interested in microblading. Many women find that the look of their new brows and the time saved every morning ends up transforming their lives. You can visit Lift Permanent Makeup or give them a call to book an appointment.

An Easy Choice For Your Landscaping Needs

One thing I’ve heard from every homeowner I’ve ever met was that finding a contractor or landscaper that was actually good at their job is almost impossible. The field is absolutely rife with one horror story after another of workers slouching on the job, projects takin months longer than they should, and ever-expanding budgets with mediocre results.

One of the worst I’ve heard recently is a contractor that was charged with completely redesigning a kitchen from the ground up (literally, they took the flooring out and everything). The guy put the poor woman on a waiting list four months after the contract was signed, and then his team proceeded to utterly mangle every single part of the job she had spent so long stressing over and planning with the owner of the company as he partied away south of the border.

Her kitchen was out of commission for months, and during much of that time her entire house smelled of various chemicals used during the construction process and was frequently choked with concrete dust as the clumsy oafs ripped up her floors to install an extra support beam. At the end of everything, she got some mismatched countertops, but otherwise things looked fine.

Fast forward a few months, and her son happened to point out to her that the new arch installed that replaced the wall that was previously there seemed to be bowing slightly. They took a couple nails and string and, sure enough, the whole ceiling was starting to collapse inward. After strenuously denying any wrong doing, after getting the second opinion of multiple other handymen, it turned out that the support structure the contractors had put into place was nowhere near strong enough for the load it now carried. Another 2 weeks were needed to make the necessary repairs.

The point is, a good construction company is way harder to find than it should be. With the kind of razor-thin margins these guys are working with and the fact that their entire business is run almost exclusively on word of mouth, you’d think they’d want to provide the best job they could.

Well, if you’re in the market for a landscaping redesign for your back or front yard and are in the San Diego area, I have some great news for you: we may have found one of the few good ones in the industry. Torrey Pines Landscaping Company is THE premier landscape design firm for Point Loma, San Diego, Encinitas, and general San Diego County area. Just take a look at some of their most recent work, a French Garden in Mission Hills and a full back yard redesign for their client in Point Loma.

Whether you’re just looking to touch up your yard or completely transform it into a modern outdoor entertainment center, Torrey Pines takes an incredible amount of pride in the work that they do and works with you to make sure you’re getting the kind of backyard urban landscaping that you’ve always dreamed of.

If you’re lucky enough to be looking for some landscaping work in Mission Hills or beyond in the San Diego area, make sure to give Torrey Pines a call. You won’t regret it.
