Termite Troubles

Today’s article is going to venture a bit into the personal realm as I tell you about my own recent troubles and the fantastic company I hired to help me out. The story begins just a few short weeks ago, when I noticed some cracks appearing in my drywall…

Last year, I contracted out some real morons to do some major remodeling in my home at the recommendation of some old family friends. The contractors knocked down some of the walls in my kitchen in order to open up space, believing from a misreading of the house plans that none of the walls were especially important or load bearing.

After enjoying my new kitchen for a couple of weeks, I began noticing some new cracks forming in the ceiling around where the old wall had been. After some investigating and bringing in a handyman friend of mine, we realized that the entire second floor of the house was beginning to bow downwards because, surprise surprise, the wall that was there originally really was load-bearing.

After some harsh words were exchanged that may or may not have involved legal threats, the contractors came back and fixed their mistakes. After the dust had cleared, we had a slightly bigger pillar holding up the second story, but the new kitchen looked nice enough.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, I began noticing some new cracks forming in a different part of the downstairs ceiling. Fearing the worst, I began drilling into the ceiling to do another investigation and found a very different problem.

Termites and their waste began pouring from the new hole and creating a gross little pile on the floor. Recognizing the severity of the infestation, I immediately began looking up some exterminator companies to come give me the bad news about what needed to be done next.

In my search, I happened to find Grand Oaks Termite Control, a southern California local company that had the best record of reviews of any other around. Not only did they have a great score, a ton of their clients had taken the time to write about how effective the company was:

I highly recommended Grand Oaks Termite Control.  I had an unusual situation where there were many areas of my wood paneling and roof that were affected by termites and wood rot. I have a decorative tree growing through the front part of my home which makes it very difficult to treat without damaging the tree. When Jason came for the preliminary inspection, he knew exactly how to effectively treat my home without harming my favorite tree. His estimate was very reasonable and his communication was top notch. He kept me appraised of all the curve balls and never stuck me with any unexpected cost. I was very impressed with the workmanship of his teammate Gary who took care of all the woodwork, a true craftsman.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Grand Oaks without any hesitation. (John B., Yelp Review)

I am in awe of Grand Oaks Termite Control. Justin and Gary came out and inspected my home and they were punctual, polite and very knowledgeable. I was so worried about my home being infested with termites, but Justin put my mind at ease. He determined that I had an isolated infestation in one room of my home and that there was no need to be tented. He gave me a fair quote and treatment of the room literally took maybe an hour. He explained that the process would not harm my family or cat and termites and eggs will not survive after the treatment. He and Gary came out a week later for the water damage of the affected area. My husband and I are so pleased and grateful we chose this company. Gary did an impeccable job of the repairs that took about 6-7 hours and you can’t even tell I had any termites or water damage. They are both so pleasant and polite and will highly recommend them to anyone. Thanks guys for an outstanding and affordable job. (Carina Z., Yelp Review)

Catch Them Before It’s Too Late

Warning! Keep your eyes open and your ears listening. It is time to pay attention to the most terrible pest: termites. These insects cause billions of dollars worth of damage across the country, every year. They eat wood and paper, which means that your home could be next.

What makes termites so dangerous is that they tend to be undetectable without a professional inspection. Subterranean termites live underground, affecting the structure of your home, and are therefore considered to create the most damage. Dry-wood termites attack above ground, and they have their sneaky ways.

Listen carefully. You might hear the subtle sound of clicking through the walls. Termites communicate to one another by shaking their bodies and banging their heads on the wood. Termites also make noises from their chewing.

Look closely. You may be surprised to know that a certain type of termite can fly. Like other flying insects, they are attracted to light and will swarm around collected water. If you see flying termites, it is likely that they have been looking to mate and establish a new colony in your home. In addition, termites shed their wings shortly after finding a mate.

It is easy to confuse termites for other types of insects. Most people mistake termites for white ants. However, there is no such thing is a white ant, which means that if you see something that looks like one, it is probably a termite. A termite has an even width throughout its body, which tends to look like the shape of rice grains.

“Galleries” are the tunnels that termites make inside of wood, however these tunnels are very difficult to detect without laboratory equipment. You can check for termites by tapping on your wood. If it sounds hollow, it may have been eaten by termites. If you notice that your wood doors and window frames are suddenly stiff and hard to open, it may be due to the moisture produced by termites as they eat. The moisture damages and changes the shape of the wood.

They also build mud-like tubes along surfaces in order to travel discreetly. But by the time you have noticed these signs, severe damage may already have been done. Noticing these clues can prevent further damage, but a professional termite inspector can detect the presence of termites even earlier. Regular inspections are highly recommended at least every year for the most thorough method of prevention. Natural Science Exterminator states on their website that they offer a free inspection and $100 off your treatment if you contact them. You can take a proactive measure against a potential termite infestation and save thousands of dollars on extermination and repair costs in the long run.

A Growing Exterminator Fighting the Growing Swarm

We here in Southern California have all heard of them before. The big bad termite. They are potentially around every corner, behind every wall, and or under your house. Like earthquakes, many Californians have come to accept the presence of these little critters as something you have to deal with while living here. Unfortunately, many people’s level of acceptance leads them down a path of neglect and general disregard for the ramifications of letting a possible termite infestation go untreated. Termites can swarm quickly and devour much of the infrastructure of your house long before you even consider picking up the phone and calling. Did you know that there are actually 3 kinds of termites in California? Check this info our from pestboard.ca.gov:

“Sometimes there will be no sign the home
is infested. Termite infestations can go
undetected for years, hidden behind walls,
floor coverings or insulation. Termite feeding
and damage can even progress undetected
in wood that is exposed because the outer
surface is usually left intact.
If you think you have termites, usually it
is advisable to hire a professional pest
control company to carry out the inspection
and control program. Before making an
appointment, make sure the company is
registered and in good standing by
calling the Structural Pest Control Board.”
