The Landscape Architects Turning Heads In Coronado

Architecture is as uniquely diverse as the peoples who developed them, with every nation in the world developing its own styles of building to reflect their environment and the spirit of its people. Buildings are one of the most visible forms of expression when you visit or see pictures of a new city or country, which makes it no surprise that it is such a common topic of discussion.

A less visible yet no less important aspect of a culture’s outward expression is landscape architecture. Landscape design has as many schools, styles, and diversity of origin as architecture, and yet here in the U.S. we tend to give it far less thought than the buildings it is designed to accompany and enhance.

From the moon gardens in China to the hanging gardens of Babylon, the use of landscaping as a source of pride, beauty, and aesthetic sensibilities forms an integral part of cultures, both ancient and new. While most people aren’t looking to create a wonder of the world on their property, creating a more beautiful home with the introduction of a well-designed landscape is well within reach of many here in coastal California.

This is because some of the most skilled landscape architects in the world call this sunny paradise home. Those looking for a new backyard design would do well to look up some of these prestigious firms, including the award-winning Torrey Pines Landscape Company.

Torrey Pines has been pushing the envelope in landscape design and maintenance since well before the turn of the century. As the years have passed, so have their skills, with many of the most opulent and beautiful properties in high-scale neighborhoods like La Jolla and Coronado featuring landscapes they designed from scratch.

The firm is also known for its customer-first philosophy, as demonstrated in the many sterling reviews left by a loyal clientele. Take a look:

We had a fantastic experience working with Torrey Pines Landscaping. Harry and his entire crew were wonderful to work with. They designed a beautiful and functional front yard for our family that fit our lifestyle and compliments our home. They really went above and beyond with every detail and the quality of their work. Anything Helps: Lake Forest & Orange County Fake Grass Installations Can Help Curb Coming Crises

Everywhere you look these days, there are portents of coming doom. Experts warn us daily that the coming years will see every crisis in the book: environmental, water supplies, power supplies, public health, economics, and so on.

In the face of all this, all one can do is focus on what small steps you can make today to lessen the impact on your family and finances if these crises do come to pass. For example, in California, taking steps to lessen your household’s water usage can not only help reduce the chances of a water crisis, it will also help you weather that crisis if and when it does come.

The installation of water-saving devices, including water heaters, toilets, and shower heads, and easy and quick methods of conserving water usage in the household. During shortages, behavioral changes like taking shorter showers and turning off the sink in between dishes when washing can help save a few gallons here and there.

One of the biggest and most impactful water conservation methods is altering your property’s landscaping to be more in line with the area’s climate. As wonderful as the weather is here in southern California, the area is the coastal portion of a desert that stretches all the way east to the Rocky Mountains, south to the tip of Baja, and north to the Bay area.

This means that the classical image of suburban living – an expanse of lush green lawn on every property – isn’t ideal for the local climate. Natural turf is a temperamental and greedy waterhog, demanding hundreds upon hundreds of gallons of water to continue its unnatural existence here in an arid climate.

There are quite a few replacements for a grass lawn, ranging from natural to manmade. Clovers and landscaping that utilize local drought-resistant plant life comprise the natural alternatives, while man-made replacements include gravel, hardscapes, and synthetic turf.

For homeowners that can’t bear to be without their verdant green lawn but can’t warrant or afford the amount of water it will take to keep their grass alive here in SoCal, fake grass is an excellent alternative. Not only will you never have to water it, but with advancements in production techniques over the years, synthetic grass is becoming almost indistinguishable from the real stuff.

The one trick to this is the initial installation. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a lawn filled with lumpy turf, as if they had torn out their grass and just laid down a green mat over the area to hide the evidence. A skilled installer will strip the area, level the ground perfectly, ensure there is appropriate drainage for when rain does come, and THEN securely install the fake grass. The end result is a perfectly uniform and tidy patch of turf that looks like a perfectly manicured putting green.

If you’re ready to make the jump to installing artificial turf, then finding a solid installer is going to be your first priority. For Orange County, the easy choice would be NoMow Turf, a company that’s been performing impeccable installations all over the county for almost a decade.

NoMow’s conscientiousness when it comes to performing perfect, uniform installations is well-known to their customers, and the company has been widely lauded for going the extra mile to accommodate pets, children and special requests.

Crisis is around every corner nowadays, and the best way to navigate through them is by taking small, concrete steps day by day. If you’re looking to take the next step in installing a synthetic lawn today, give NoMow Turf a call.

Sustainable Del Mar Landscaping

Gardening and landscaping can truly transform your life and home. Gardening is a great form of physical activity that provides opportunities to be exposed to sunlight and fresh air. The primal act of working with the Earth and grounding oneself with nature has endless emotional and mental benefits.

Living beautifully does not need to be expensive. Mother Nature is a gift that keeps on giving, and the gift that we citizens of Planet Earth must protect.

Temperatures are rising, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and more extreme climate events – like heavy rainstorms and record-high temperatures – are already happening. Many of these observed changes are linked to the rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, caused by human activities.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)

Landscaping architecture can transform your backyard into a sanctuary for working, dining, exercising, or simply relaxing alone or with friends.

California’s Mediterranean climate allows for an abundance of agricultural growth. You can save money and time on your weekly grocery run by producing your vegetables and fruits! Designating even just a small section of space as a garden to grow your own produce can be immensely rewarding. Moreover, you’ll be able to eat seasonally and feed your family with authentic farm-to-table meals.

Productive gardening is essentially maximizing your results while minimizing resources that tax you and the environment. Work with nature. Choose plants that are native to your region, with sunlight, soil, and temperature requirements that align with what naturally exists there.

Xeriscaping is perfect for gardening in a dry climate, as it involves little to no watering outside of that which naturally occurs. As water depletion becomes more and more concerning, xeriscaping provides an enormous advantage to traditional gardening for its minimal reliance on and use of water. Like zeroscaping, xeriscaping prioritizes native plants, which tend to be less prone to pests and diseases. Zeroscaping and xeriscaping are both low-maintenance and cost-efficient.

Saving money on your water bill is also as easy as collecting rainwater (for free!) with a rain barrel, which can store water for later gardening use. Also, it is recommended to water yours before mid-morning, as the harsh midday and afternoon sun can easily cause surface water to evaporate. Moreover, while sprinklers and hoses can give an overall good dose, consider installing a drip irrigation system that can minimize water waste and pesticide transfer by delivering water much closer to the plants.

As you envision your outdoor space, design for sustainability right from the get-go. We recommend hiring a professional landscaper who has expertise working in your area. For landscaping in San Diego, Torrey Pines Landscaping has designed and built stunning outdoor gardens and spaces for entertaining, dining, working, and more. They design and build landscapes, meaning that your hopes and needs for the space will be carefully crafted from the ground up.

Planning ahead will save you time and money in the long term—and it can help save the planet. You can give Torrey Pines Landscape Company a call today.

Supercharge Your Life At Home

The World Health Organization defines burnout as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed”, characterized by
“feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion

“It’s not a temporary affliction: It’s the millennial condition. It’s our base temperature. It’s our background music. It’s the way things are. It’s our lives.”

How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation, Anne Helen Petersen

Why do so many of us feel burnt out? Millennials report that with the popular rise of entrepreneurship and social media, the resulting “hustle culture” has created a distortion of reality in which work is a neverending priority in life. This has put many under the pressure to constantly work without taking breaks.

Millennials are keenly aware that time is the most precious and non-renewable resource that we all have. Everyone is in search of more time because there simply isn’t enough to check off everything on our daunting to-do lists. Everything in our day-to-day lives feels like a race against time.

If you already have good productivity and time management habits in place but still feel overwhelmed with a neverending to-do list, it might be time to consider supercharging your life with some time-saving hacks.

Biohacking Can Increase Productivity

The self-improvement aisle at the bookstore is filled with productivity books on how to accomplish more in less time.

Popularized by renowned self-improvement experts Dave Asprey and Tim Ferris, biohacking is a popular trend among Silicon Valley folks and technology enthusiasts who have a curious and keen interest in self-experimentation.

One of the first biohacking techniques to gain mainstream traction was bulletproof coffee: a blended mixture of hot coffee, grass-fed organic ghee, and coconut MCT oil. Bulletproof coffee lovers claim that the blend provides sustained releases of energy from the caffeine from the coffee and the ketogenic effects of the fats.

Synthetic Grass Saves Homeowners Time And Money

From self-driving cars to life on Mars, Elon Musk is a technology entrepreneur and business magnate known to work between 90 to 120 hours per week. Hustle culture glorifies ridiculously long working hours by pointing to entrepreneurs like Musk—if he can run multiple successful tech companies, who is to say that their workload is too much to handle?

If we can put a man on the moon, we can create a lawn that you never have to water or mow. Artificial turf is quite popular in Orange County, as homeowners want a luscious, uniform green lawn without spending the enormous amount of time, energy, and money required for lawn maintenance.

Read Stan U.‘s review of NoMow Turf on Yelp

The most time-consuming parts of maintaining a lawn are regular watering and mowing. If your schedule is already jam-packed, installing a synthetic lawn will allow you to cross one big thing off your to-do list so that you can use that time on relaxing and recovering from burnout.

Homeowners of any age can benefit from synthetic grass, especially senior homeowners who may not have the physical mobility required for the physical labor of lawn care.

NoMow Turf installs beautiful landscape artificial grass for putting greens, pets, sports fields, schools, front yards, backyards, and more.

Getting Ready For The Cookout

As I type this I’m watching the birds are beginning to raid my woven flower planters for nesting material and that can only mean one thing – spring is right around the corner! That means sunny days here in southern California and planning out your newest home renovations.

For some of us, that time could not come soon enough. A wet early winter caused a lot of damage to the remaining grout and mortar in my aging hardscape out back, and I’ve been chomping at the bit to start a full renovation of the yard.

Since I bought my home several years ago, I’ve slowly been renovating it room by room, getting the inside updated from 70’s chic to a tasteful contemporary. All the while, I’ve been unhappily watching my yard go from bad to worse as old, poorly constructed hardscape crumbled and unsightly spruce trees killed any competitor I dared plant on their turf.

I decided long ago that we would need to tear everything down in the yard and start from scratch. It’s going to be a long, hard job, but I can already imagine living it up during summer with that gorgeous outdoor kitchen and garden.

The only question left is: who do I trust to implement my vision?! Well, it’s not much of a question, since I already know the answer: Torrey Pines Landscaping!

I’ve had my eye on them for a couple years now as I’ve been scanning local home and garden publications looking for inspirations. I saw one of the most beautiful yards I’d ever seen in one issue of San Diego Home&Garden and new that whatever company had built that was the official king of outdoor kitchen construction in San Diego. As it turned out, it was one of Torrey Pines’ latest endeavors.

If you don’t trust me, just take a look at some of their reviews:

We are so pleased with the “re-boot” of our landscape and extremely happy that we chose TP Landscape to plan & design and then execute on that plan. We also decided to stay with them for our weekly maintenance as well. We couldn’t be happier with the level of detailed planning, support and responsiveness we received throughout the 3 month process and the professionalism exhibited by the entire staff!!  Thanks Harry and team….it looks even better now three months later!

Why You Should Consider Installing Synthetic Grass For Your Lawn

Lawn Care is a difficult task for many property owners. It requires continuous effort to maintain the growth of natural grass and further, it requires major involvement in maintenance and care. The selection of lawn grass must be done carefully depending upon the climatic conditions and soil quality in the target area. The owners also need to make efforts to use fertilizers from time to time to avoid diseases and attacks of several diseases and insects to the natural grass.

Experts advise going ahead with the locally adapted grass so that it can survive the climate. However, at the same time, it is necessary to supply enough water and nutrients to nourish the grass. If you are having problems growing natural grass, you may need to call experts from time to time to check if the grass is experiencing some disease or weed issue.

Studies show that a buildup in the lawns can occur; that is basically an additional layer over a healthy lawn. It can prevent nutrients and water from getting to the grassroots. The buildup must be kept minimum, which can be done by creating a proper balance of natural conditions. As pests can also affect the growth of grass in your lawn, they must be checked regularly to avoid any kind of damage. All of these responsibilities can make law care a complicated task for property owners. Therefore, it is advised to install synthetic grass on properties that could use more greenery. Due to its low maintenance and weather resilience, the artificial grass market is reported to rise to 4.2 billion USD by the end of 2027.

Why is synthetic grass a more economical and reliable solution for homeowners?

Synthetic grass is a widely recommended solution for homeowners who live in areas with unfavorable environmental and soil conditions. This specially designed artificial grass is a reliable alternative for those who cannot expend a lot of resources to care for the natural grass option. The main advantage of synthetic grass in the OC is that it doesn’t require maintenance. Once you have installed it, it can serve you beautifully for years. The lawns made by synthetic grass are also a great place to play for kids and other family activities. Moreover, you need not worry about unsightly grass stains on your clothes while sitting or playing on artificial grass lawns. Synthetic grass is a great alternative to natural grass that can stain brown or green on clothes, and these stains are difficult to get out. As this grass doesn’t require major efforts for maintenance and care, it is one of the most eco-friendly solutions for homeowners. There is no need to invest in fertilizers and chemical solutions to get rid of insects and weeds. It is a great option for recreational areas such as putting greens, patio surfaces, tennis courts, and bocce ball courts as well. This cost-effective fake grass offers a long-lasting value while providing impressive appeal for years ahead. Therefore, it must be taken into consideration while installing grass on your lawn.

Vertical gardening

Experts advise choosing plants that can survive over a varying range of temperatures. If you don’t have extensive outdoor space, it is possible to create a big impact. Some of the best vertical gardening ideas that you can try include plants on the wall vases, wall planters, terra cotta planter walls, and vertical jungles. In addition, designers and architects love to create hardscaping patterns such as basketweaves, chevron, waves and lattice.

Sophisticated irrigation solutions

Today’s busy lifestyle does not allow people to spend several hours in the garden everyday. But modern technologies make it easier to consistently ensure adequate lawn maintenance and care procedures. Remote irrigation technology allows for property owners to enjoy peace of mind. The most sophisticated smart technology irrigation systems can be controlled through remotes, with updates accessible via smartphone, bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.

DIY and repurposing

Many are spending the extra time they have during the pandemic quarantine to attempt DIY garden design ideas. You can find several DIY ideas or tutorials on websites such as YouTube or Pinterest on outdoor home improvement and garden projects.

However, for best results, we advise hiring experts for your landscaping needs. With Torrey Pines Landscaping, it’s possible to find many unique options in design to enhance the experience of your garden. You can see their portfolio on their website and give them a call today.

Lawn Economics

With the California climate in flux, homeowners across the state are beginning to make some highly difficult choices when it comes to their landscaping. Droughts are becoming more frequent and more severe, and when rains do come, they are becoming torrential, leading to many to give up on the delicate business of lawn care.

As lawn upkeep begins to become prohibitively expensive both in costs associated and time and energy needed to keep the grass alive and uniform, many are making the switch away from classic turf to its various alternatives. One that is beginning to surge in popularity is the artificial turf lawn, which has seen radical advances in technology in the recent past that have made it a more attractive alternative to natural turf.

The secret to a successful switch over to synthetic grass is the skill of the installer, and if you live in the Orange County area, there is no company more skilled than NoMow Turf. The guys at NoMow have been wowing customers all over coastal Orange County for 15 years and have the testimonials to prove it:

Wow!!!! Way to go NoMow Turf! Being a realtor, I have recommended you to several clients. Your team is always on time, budget, affordable, and professional. In an industry where people tend to over promise and under deliver, it is rare to find a company that meets all customers’ expectations, and more. The work your crew did made my clients back yard look INCREDIBLE. We SOLD the house with multiple offers. The best part of the home was in fact the backyard From a standard dirt yard, you transformed the entire experience of the outdoor living on a million dollar Home. As stated before, I will CONTINUE to refer my business your way. Thank you for doing such a GREAT job. Your business ethics, character, and integrity are very evident. WONDERFUL JOB NOMOW! Home run again!

Katie B., Google Review

Sierra and the team at No Mow Turf were absolutely fantastic. They were so quick to come out and get a proposal. They understood from our initial phone call what we wanted and put the proposal together without even meeting us (due to our work schedules). They patiently waited while we price shopped and then got us on the schedule quickly when we were ready to proceed.

Our project took a lot of work–it included pulling up landscaping, demoing concrete stepping pads, leveling out a 700 square foot area that was in terrible shape, and prepping it for the turf. The crew moved quickly and methodically, but didn’t cut any corners. Although they hoped to finish in one day, they knew they wouldn’t get it done perfectly so they took two days. We were blown away by the quality of the job, including turf installed with precision even behind our two AC units. When the job was done, they cleaned up impeccably and you’d never know there had been a 5 foot high pile of road base in our front yard the day before.

I can’t recommend No Mow Turf highly enough. Everything about this project was top quality, and the price was unbeatable.

Keren de Zwart, Google Review

If you’re looking for a quality install that won’t get flooded when the rains come and looks just like the real thing, you need to go with NoMow. They do incredible installs and have a massive selection of different types of turf to match whatever natural grass you happen to love.

Landscape Art

In every profession, certain individuals put such an intense level of focus and energy into perfecting their craft that the results often become near works of art in their own right. This applies to carpentry, manufacturing, and – the subject of today’s article – landscaping.

We’re all well aware of the intense beauty of past landscaping efforts in places like Versailles, but what if I told you we have some of the most interesting and gorgeous contemporary pieces of landscaping right here in southern California? Companies like Torrey Pines Landscaping Company operating right here out of Point Loma are creating some of the most complex and beautiful cultural and local landscaping projects in the world, and they have the portfolio to prove it.

Their work, which has won recognition from a number of local publications like San Diego Home & Garden, has transformed disastrous yards suffering from decades of neglect into intricate works of art. Where there were once yards consisting of nothing but some dying grass and a few scraggily trees comes a botanical paradise that takes you through a number of the world’s histories via varying architecture and landscaping styles.

Their customers also have nothing but good things to say about them – their G-page and Yelp reviews have a number of long and glowing testimonials regarding their professionalism and the quality of their work. Robert Engler left this review, for instance, on Google:

Torrey Pines is the 4th company, starting over 10 years ago, we have had for landscapers. We had two mow & blow companies, and one other professional company but weren’t happy. TP fantastic. Our site supervisor is a true horticulture expert, the employees have an educational 1/2 day every other week, we NEVER have to worry about anything and our 1 acre+ of landscaping is a joy and pleasure. They just did a major needed driveway and retaining wall replacement; they are excellent hardscape contractors as well. They asked to copy and paste the note I sent them, but it wasn’t sufficient to communicate the quality of their work.

Gary Elliott, also through Google, remarks on the company’s uniquely exceptional work:

I cannot think of another company that has performed so exceptionally. I want to credit Doug Dilworth and his team that worked with us every step of the way as we transformed our backyard wasteland into a work of art. Doug is creative professional who stands by his word and delivered as one could only hope. I highly recommend Torrey Pines Landscape Company.

Finally, Ryan S. tells a story about Torrey Pines rectifying the horror show that was their new home’s landscaping upon purchase:

“We bought a home in the Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe, and it was an ugly mess of landscaping with a design that made the front look short and covered the back golf course view.  It needed a major beautification.
We knew we needed Torrey Pines Landscaping, and their wonderful team lead by the humble Harry Thompson.  Harry has a servant’s heart plus a special talent for landscape design.
Torrey Pines Landscaping transformed the ugly landscaping to an awarding winning design that ended up on the cover of San Diego Home/Garden.
sandiegohomegarden.com/2…
If you really appreciate great design, beautiful flowers and nature, and quality work, Torrey Pines Landscaping is the only choice!”

All crafts have their artists, and Torrey Pines fits the bill for landscape maintenance and development. If you’re in the San Diego area and are looking to beautify your yard beyond the usual mow-and-blow, give them a call:

To Turf Or Not To Turf

Southern California may have some of the best weather on the planet, but it is no stranger to environmental disasters. The record ferocity of wildfires in the preceding years, while primarily affecting northern and central California, have not left our part of the state untouched: the Woolsey fire of 2018 was one of the most destructive fires in the State’s history, dwarfed only by the other massive wildfires concurrently burning through the piled-up undergrowth in the state’s forests.

One of the primary causes for these events is the high incidence of draught in the state – California, while incredibly beautiful, is highly subject to the ever-changing weather patterns in the Pacific ocean and the consistent high pressure systems moving in from the high desert to its east. This relationship between low pressure ocean systems and high pressure desert atmospheric conditions leads to a propensity for random, yet devastating, extended periods of draught, which leaves great swathes of our forests dead and the perfect kindling for massive fires to break out.

As citizens of this great state, we’ve been rather lax in our response to these dangers, choosing to utilize far greater amounts of water than the state can reasonably produce on its own, leading to greater and greater shortages in years of draught. One of the primary culprits of this water usage is the suburban home dwellers’ favorite aspect of home ownership – our lawns!

Lawns in the state can suck up more than 100 gallons of water in a year, and with millions of homes and businesses that are looking to have that luscious green carpet in front of their doors, the compounding effect leads to an ever greater demand for water on our parched state. With many unwilling to give up the aesthetically pleasing and calming effects of their greenery, what can we, as responsible residents in the great state of California, do?

One alternative that is gaining considerable momentum in areas of southern California like Orange County and San Diego is replacing your natural grass with artificial grass. A far cry from the astroturf of football stadiums in the 1970’s, modern turf is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, with plenty of different options for texture, color, and tactile sensation.

The growth in usage is no joke – according to a Guardian article from August 2nd, 2019, “…the market is growing. Dozens of specialist firms now market fake grass as a replacement for garden lawns. UK sales surged during last year’s record summer temperatures, according to the industry journal Hortweek, while a report by Up Market Research valued the global market at $2.5bn (£2bn) in 2016 and forecasts a “staggering” rise to $5.8bn by 2023.”

As temperatures continue to rise due to global climate change and average rain fall begin to decline in parts of the world, those who desire a greener lawn may need to begin looking for alternatives. For those of us in the beautiful southern California region who are looking to take the plunge into the world of artificial turf, we highly recommend the local company NoMow Turf, who have been servicing our communities for 15 years.

A quick perusal through their Yelp and Google Review pages reveals that the company and its owner, Pat Bray, have solid reputation for honest, competent work, and the results of their installations speaks for themselves through the pictures available.

If you’re interested in helping our state conserve water while retaining the gorgeous green of your lawn, please give the spotlighted company a look:
