The Multipurpose American Home

For a long while, most would imagine those with powerful and glamorous careers as people who would wake up, get dressed in expensive clothes, order an expensive coffee, and drive to work in an expensive car before finally arriving at a luxurious high-rise office building located in the core of a fast-paced city.

But today, people are seeking different kinds of career luxuries. Instead of status symbols and paycheques, people want freedom and flexibility in their professional lives. Commuting is out and working from home is in. Money can certainly buy you fancy clothes, coffees, and cars, but it can’t always buy you the comfort of working in your pajamas or spending more time with your friends and family.

Over the last few years, cultural shifts and historic events have changed the desires and values of the average American office worker. Life is short, and people have decided that vanity and consumerism don’t contribute much to one’s ability to live a good life.

The home is now the office, gym, bar, and mall. We can work at home, work out from home, party at home, and shop at home. People first began spending more time at home because we had to social distance, and now we spend most of our day at home because we want to. Why go outside and mingle when you can stay inside and isolate?

In many ways, we are returning to our roots. People are realizing that their homes have so much more functional utility than they had ever considered before. In addition to being convenient, doing everything from home can save a significant amount of time and money. Remote work has literally redefined what work-life balance means to us.

It’s easy to ignore your chores when you are constantly on the go. But now, even though our lives haven’t gotten any less busy, it’s much harder to ignore the dishes piling up in the sink or the sound of creaking floors when you spend most of your day actually inside your home rather than running out of it.

Environment shapes our daily routines and habits. Every human has a finite amount of willpower, which is why we need to create spaces that are conducive to our productivity and happiness. If you love to work and play at home, then it’s in your best interest to have a regular home maintenance plan.

In many parts of the United States, pests are a recurring problem throughout the year. Hiring a termite exterminator is especially important in Glendora because of the density of colonies in the area. Moreover, termites are especially problematic for homeowners who work from home, because they do more than just give you creepy-crawly goosebumps—they can literally devour your floors and walls.

We recommend that homeowners protect their homes with annual pest inspections. Moreover, if you have an infestation, professional extermination is usually the safest and most effective treatment. Skipping inspections or attempting DIY treatments can allow the pests to continue damaging the home, which will only cost more money and cause more headaches in the long term.

The Pest

I had been having nightmares recently, of creatures skittering around me in the dark as I walked down a large, wide hallway. The walls were obscured by dark shadows, and there were no windows to let in the light of the sun or moon.

The skittering increased in volume as I walked with the immutable sense of being watched and followed. I would begin to walk faster, then break into a run as I felt the first tiny claw on my skin. Soon, I would be howling in fear and pain as I tore through the never ending hall, small skeletons of demonic creatures using tiny claws to clamber up my legs and chew on my unprotected flesh.

The dream always ended with me reaching a featureless wall, blocking my escape. Looking back, eyes wide with horror as a teeming mass of the creatures descends upon me, the last thing I would see before waking up with a start is a rodent-like jaw reaching for my eyes…

In the waking world, I began noticing small, dark clumps in the cupboards as I would make my morning coffee. In the night, as I drifted off, I would sometimes hear the skittering and jolt awake, sure that the monsters from my dreams had followed me into the waking world.

Well, as it turned out, it was a little more pedestrian than that. One morning, I woke up to hear a loud squeaking, almost a shriek, coming from the deep confines of my closet. Upon investigation, it turned out the previous occupant had hidden a mousetrap in the room, and a large, gnarled rat had found out for himself that the trap was still in working order.

Disgusted, I knew that the cause of all these fearful dreams was the scurrying and scraping of rats clambering within my walls. There was only one thing to do: call the exterminators.

Living in Grand Oaks at the time, the first result I found upon searching for  a local exterminator was Grand Oaks Termite Control, a local company that was widely praised for their effectiveness at controlling a different pest than the one plaguing me. Calling the company, they confirmed that they did not take care of rodents, but they did point me to a great company that did. They were lively and professional during the call, and I got the sense that they were great at what they did, which was confirmed by the reviews I read when searching for them:

If you have any type of termites or wood boring insect infestations, GRAND OAKS TERMITE CONTROL is the professional GO-TO exterminator company to resolve your issues. The owner, Justin Mater is a fully state licensed termite control specialist and is very knowledgeable about termite infestation and approaches towards exterminating its colonies. what I especially liked was his work ethics….they came as early as 6am in the morning (ON TIME!) to work on & treat my property….very much a NO BS straight-forward extermination company which does not mess around! If they said they will be there….they will be there to take care of your infestation problems! highly recommended!

Extraordinary Customer Service! We have been dealing with flying insects and thought it was termites. This company was recommended, and the owner Justin totally amazed us with his genuine service – assessment and recommendation. It turns out that we were dealing with flying ants instead and he recommended a company that services that. However, to rule out any termite issues, we asked him to do an inspection. Joe and I are so grateful for the experience we had with him getting informed about insect issues!

The exterminator they pointed me towards was great at his job, but I have scheduled an additional inspection with Jason and his team at Grand Oaks. If I have one pest plaguing me, might as well check to make sure I don’t have two.

If you’re in need of termite extermination services and are located near Grand Oaks, call Grand Oaks Termite Control. Don’t wait until you’re having nightmares of your house collapsing around you, the experience is not a pleasant one.
